Bridge Building

On Saturday, December 19, 2009 the Kiwanis Club of Ticonderoga held a Popsicle Stick Bridge Building contest for Junior High Students in the area.  Nine teams from St. Mary's School and Ticonderoga Middle School competed by building bridges out of popsicle sticks following many rules.  Each team was given 150 sticks.  They had 1 hour and 45 minutes to build the bridges that had to be a minimum of 20 inches long, maximum of 22 inches long, maximum of 7 inches tall, and maximum of 4 inches wide.  After the bridges were completed they were judged for both appearance and efficiency.  Several judges contributed scores and then the efficiency part of the competition began.  Each bridge was weighed and then buckets of weight were hung from them to judge their efficiency.  Eight St. Mary's students competed on three teams.  St. Mary's won the competition by placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for their bridges.  First place went to Mark Donohue and Kara Zielinski, whose bridge held 99.5 pounds, second place went to Maura Jebb, Annette Hurlburt, and Jake Mildon whose bridge carried    65   pounds, and third place went to Makayla Holt, Taylor Suddard, and Amanda Hurlburt whose bridge held   41.5  pounds.  Each student received a t-shirt and all winners received a trophy for their success!
